Matoi Ryuko (纏 流子)
纏 (matoi) – “wrap” or “bind”
流 (ryu) – “flow” or “current” 子 (ko) – “child”
Ryuko’s name means “flowing child,” and her last name, Matoi, means wrapping.
着流す(ki naga su) is verb. it means wearing casually or good. So, her name represents totally herself.
Kiryuin Satsuki(鬼龍院 皐月)
鬼 (ki) – “demon” or “ogre”, 龍 (ryu) – “dragon”, 院 (in) -this is last name decorating part, especially noble people. (But not so rare in commoners too.)
“institution” or “temple” 皐 (satsu) – “marsh” or “swamp” 月 (ki) – “moon”
Satsuki’s name means “marsh moon,” and her last name, Kiryuin, refers to an institution or temple of demon dragons, reflecting her powerful and authoritative position in the series.
Manganshoku Mako(満艦飾 マコ)
満 (man) – “full”, 艦 (kan) – “warship” or “naval vessel”, 飾 (shoku) – “decorate”.
So, Manganshoku, means “fully decorated warship”
マコ (mako) – this is written in katakana, so it doesn’t have a specific kanji meaning. I think Manganshoku Mako is named for good for rhyme.
Mikisugi Aikuro(美木杉 愛九郎)
美 (mi) – “beauty” or “beautiful” 木 (ki) – “tree” or “wood” 杉 (sugi) – “cedar” 愛 (ai) – “love” or “affection” 九 (ku) – “nine” 郎 (ro) – “son”
Aikuro’s name means “love, ninth, son” and his last name, Mikisugi, refers to a beautiful cedar tree.
His voice actor is Shinichiro Miki, I supppose something related to his name.
Gamagori Ira(蟇郡 苛)
蟇 (gama) – “toad”, 郡 (go-o-ri) – “district” or “county”
苛 (ira) – “harsh” or “severe”
Gama is same as Naruto’s master Gama Sennin. Japanese have some inspiration to toad which is sennin’s pet or strong and creepy animal. If you wrote Gamagoori(蒲 郡), it is famous beach in Japan. Maybe this is word play.
